Based on Grammy Award trends and the selection criteria, here’s my prediction of who has the best chances of winning among the Nigerian nominees:
Key Grammy Criteria
Musical Quality & Artistry – The Grammy Awards prioritize vocal performance, production, and musical composition.
Cultural & Global Impact – Songs that resonate beyond their original market stand a better chance.
Industry Influence – Grammy voters often consider an artist’s impact on the music industry, not just popularity.
Past Grammy Success – Artists with prior Grammy wins or nominations often have an edge.
Predictions for Nigerian Winners
Best African Music Performance
Most Likely to Win: Burna Boy (“Higher”) or Tems (“Love Me JeJe”)
Why? Burna Boy has a strong Grammy record, winning in 2021 for Twice As Tall. His song “Higher” has received global recognition. Tems, with multiple nominations, has also gained Grammy credibility through her work with international artists (Drake, Beyoncé).
Best Global Music Album
Most Likely to Win: Tems (“Born in the Wild”) or Rema (“Heis”)
Why? Tems’ album blends R&B and Afro-fusion, making it Grammy-friendly. Rema, with “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez, has massive global influence. His sound is fresh and unique.
Best R&B Song
Most Likely to Win: Tems (“Burning”)
Why? The Grammy R&B category favors strong songwriting and vocal performance. Tems has built a strong reputation in this genre, especially in the U.S.
Who Has an Outside Chance?
Asake & Wizkid (“MMS”) – Asake is new to the Grammys, and while Wizkid has been nominated before, his recent works haven’t been as strong as previous Grammy-winning efforts.
Davido & Lojay (“Sensational”) – Davido’s global influence is undeniable, but this might not be the Grammy-winning track for him.
Final Verdict
Most Likely Nigerian Grammy Winners: Tems & Burna Boy
Possible Surprise Win: Rema
Tems has the highest chances because of her strong presence in multiple categories and her growing reputation with the Grammy voting academy. Burna Boy remains a Grammy favorite, and Rema could pull an upset due to his global dominance.
